In 2004, the Auburn football team had a perfect season under U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), finishing 13-0 and winning the SEC championship. Despite this, they weren't invited to compete in the BCS National Championship game.
Now, 21 years later, that wrong has been righted, according to Tuberville, after Auburn recently claimed the title for that year.
"Well, 21 years ago, we go undefeated. We're the only SEC team to ever be left out. We went undefeated. USC played Oklahoma. It was kind of a runaway game. USC got caught with a hand in the cookie jar with some players they have paid. So it was vacated," Tuberville explained Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "The Will Cain Show."
"So, at the end of the day, 21 years later, last week, they anointed us national champions for 2004. And I just happened to have my ring right here. I bought everybody a ring," he said.
"I didn't get it out of the box, Will, for 21 years. And so I have been wearing it ever since last week. And I'm proud for the players and the coaches of that team, because well-deserved, and it was a great football team."
