Crime in our nation's capital is down, but Democrats seem to think that's a bad thing.
Since President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to help clean up the streets of Washington, D.C. and restore order, the city has seen a significant drop in various crimes, including an 87% drop in carjackings and a 45% decrease in violent crimes, Fox News reported. Despite this, D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb is suing the Trump administration to end the deployment.
On Saturday, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) said sending in the Guard was the right thing to do, regardless of the backlash from Democrats.
"If I didn't know better, I'd think they want us to turn into a third-world country," Tuberville said on Fox Business Network's "Maria Bartiromo's Wall Street."
"I've been in the Senate for five years now. When I first got here, the first day, by the way, was January 6, 2021. We had a lot of National Guard people come in at that time, but we had homeless everywhere, but it really hadn't gotten much better."
Tuberville laid the blame on D.C.'s liberal leadership for not supporting its law enforcement.
"The people that are leadership in Washington D.C. don't take pride in our city," he said. "I don't know whether funneling the money off or doing something else with it. Our law enforcement, they try, but they're not backed up by the justice system."
Until recently, Tuberville said he would always carry some form of protection on his daily jogs through the city.
"I carry a golf club with me," he said. "I warn my people from Alabama when they come to visit Washington, D.C., be very careful. Look over your shoulder. Be around other people. Don't be by yourself. And you shouldn't have to do that."
He continued, "It has gotten a lot better. I've talked to National Guard people this week out on my walk or my jog, and they love being there because they have actually seen it change themselves being from other states. And again, the Democrats are going to push back on it, but at the end of the day, this is the right thing to do."
