At this early stage of the Trump administration, the state of Alabama is already starting to land some key staffers.
Emory Cox, a senior staffer for U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), has been named by Trump as special assistant to the President for International Economic Relations.
Cox, a 29-year-old from Pell City, is a 2014 graduate of Birmingham’s Altamont School and Washington and Lee University, where in 2018 he earned a Bachelor’s degree summa cum laude. He was tapped for academics honors Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa in college.
While in college, Cox was chairman of the College Republicans Club and the Alabama state chair during the 2016 mock convention.
On the Tuberville staff, Cox served as senior economic adviser, covering issues of appropriations, economics and public finances, housing and community development, science and technology, small businesses, social welfare and taxation.
Cox served as a White House intern in the Office of Presidential Personnel in the first Trump administration. He then was appointed associate director of the National Economic Council.
In his previous White House role, Cox covered the financial policy portfolios and worked on banking and securities regulation issues, student loans for disabled veterans, and retirement security.
Cox engineered President Trump 45’s successful 2019 plan to forgive student loan debt of military veterans totally and permanently disabled as a result of their military service.
He had previously interned for U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Mobile), the Senate Banking Committee, and U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks).
He is an active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Lexington, Virginia.
U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) made this statement about the Cox appointment on X:
