With the midterms fast approaching, control over Congress and the success of President Donald Trump's agenda hang in the balance, along with the future of America itself, according to U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn).
1819 News CEO Bryan Dawson recently sat down with the former Auburn football coach at his office in Washington, D.C., for a wide-ranging discussion on the current political climate and the future of Alabama.
While fighting against Sharia law and looking ahead at improving Alabama if and when he becomes governor, Tuberville said passing the SAVE America Act to protect election integrity was the “number one” priority between now and the November midterms.
“If we don't get that done, I don't know whether we'll ever win a majority in an election, whether it's the House, the Senate, or the White House again, because once the Democrats get control of it, get control of Congress and the House again, they'll bust the filibuster,” he said. “They'll change everything up, and they'll push everything that will lean their way in an election time. And it's going to be a hard push to win. So that's the reason it's so important for the next, what, six, seven, eight months that we get this act passed through … the Senate, and to President Trump to sign.
He continued, "And what is this? It's about voting rights. It's about photo ID, no ballot harvesting, one-day voting, and it's no mail-in ballots. All those things that the Democrats cheated on in 2020, and they continue to cheat on it every year. You've got to remember, there's about 15 blue states that it's almost impossible for us to win, because they do whatever it takes, finagle things around to make sure that their newest girlfriend, which is the illegal aliens, so they can vote. So we have got to make adjustments to our voting procedures before the next election. If not, we won't win.”
In addition to the economy and border security, Tuberville said election integrity is always among the top issues he hears about from his constituents in Alabama.
“They always bring up, ‘Coach, is my vote going to count? I mean, I'll go vote. I love voting. I love voting for our country. I love voting for our state, but I just have doubts that my vote counts.’ And so that's a shame. It's an absolute shame,” Tuberville said. “It's a very minor thing that could be done very easily. It's not minor in terms of voting. Everybody should get one vote that counts. But for them to have that doubt in their mind, that no matter what they do, it doesn't count. We've got to fix that.”
The SAVE America Act faces an uphill battle in the Senate, with some Republicans already showing hesitancy in passing the measure. Tuberville and others have called for an end to the 60-vote filibuster threshold so that bills can be passed by a simple majority.
