On Thursday, the Tuscumbia City Police Department announced it was turning over its investigation into the injuries of Deshler High School freshman August Borden to the Franklin County Juvenile Probation Office.
“After two weeks of investigation, the Tuscumbia Police Department has taken the case from Deshler Highschool, and has transferred it to the Franklin County Juvenile Probation office,” the department stated in a post on Facebook. “They are also receiving assistance from the Madison County District Attorneys office. All of the subjects and witnesses (with exception of the coaches) are all under the age of 18, so that is where the case will have jurisdiction.”
Deshler High School is part of Tuscumbia City Schools in Colbert County. It is unclear why the case was transferred to Franklin County officials.
Borden was at an after-school weightlifting session on August 19 when he suffered significant injuries to his head, face and body. Initially reported as a "fall," the football player received CPR and had to be airlifted to an intensive care unit in Birmingham, where he was treated for multiple injuries, including a fractured skull, two broken orbital sockets, a concussion, and various cuts and bruises.
Borden’s parents and the members of the community have been calling for transparency after some school staff claimed another student was involved in the incident.
