The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) released information Wednesday about a deadly incident involving two inmates working on the side of the road.

Ronnie Steven Cornelius, 30, and Colt Eugene Morris, 40, both inmates at Hamilton Community-Based Facility, were part of an 11-man crew picking up trash along Highway 278 in Marion County when hit by a car.

ADOC commissioner John Hamm said, “ADOC would like to express its deepest condolences to the families of these two men who were killed in this tragic accident.”

ADOC said both men were wearing safety vests and were following safety protocols.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the single-vehicle crash.

Cornelius was serving a 20-year sentence for first-degree robbery out of Colbert County.

Morris was serving a 30-year sentence for first-degree theft of property out of Escambia County.
