The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office released the identities of a man and woman killed in what officials are calling a mass shooting in Birmingham.

Bernard Duane Montez Watts, 50, and Diandra Young Johnson, 33, were shot in the 100 block of Holley Avenue at around 8:31 p.m. Thursday. They were transported to UAB Hospital, where Montez was pronounced dead at 9:25 p.m. Johnson died at 12:39 a.m. Friday.

The Birmingham Police Department responded to the scene to investigate. Officer De'rell Freeman said they discovered seven people suffering from gunshot wounds. Investigators believe the shooting occurred during a gathering.

“We won’t sleep until we find out who has done this, who has caused this tragedy in this community,” Freeman said. “We are asking anyone if you have any information, contact our detectives directly.”
