This week, New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani issued a warning to the American people: “[T]here is no problem too large for government to solve.” That line reflects a shift away from freedom and personal responsibility toward centralized government control.
Mamdani’s win is alarming, not just because of his socialist agenda – which will be disastrous for New York City – but also because of his views on immigration. His platform openly positions the city as a sanctuary for those here illegally, even proposing a $100 million funding boost for illegal immigrant legal defense services.
When a candidate campaigns on rewarding law-breaking by offering legal defense or benefits to those here illegally, that ensures the Americans in his city will come last. The argument in New York is that Mamdani’s open-armed welcome for illegal immigration turned into votes – and that some New Yorkers saw the writing on the wall. If citizenship, law and borders don’t matter, then maybe elections don’t either.
Of course, that isn’t true, and we can never let that happen in Alabama.
Socialism depends on rewriting the social contract. If government is the answer to every problem, then individuals lose their liberty. If illegal aliens are treated like citizens, the voice of the lawful citizen is diluted. Socialism shifts power away from Americans and toward bureaucrats.
Mamdani’s agenda is extreme beyond immigration – rent control, a plethora of free services, defunding the police, major tax hikes, and more government involvement in everyday life for New Yorkers.
Socialism and communism both promise salvation from government. But in truth, they place government over the individual. They shrink freedom, punish innovation, and elevate dependency. The mayoral race in New York City shows that we must be on the offense against this trend.
“I’ve always felt the nine most terrifying words in the English language are: ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help,’” President Ronald Reagan once said. So when a candidate says, “[T]here is no problem too large for government to solve,” we ought to take it seriously – and reject it firmly.
I will continue working with President Trump and my colleagues to fight this trend by ensuring election integrity, reforming government spending, and supporting legislation that puts Americans first.
I am grateful that God has blessed us to live in a state where common sense still prevails, and I will keep fighting to ensure it stays that way.
