FAIRHOPE — Based on the Biden administration reportedly opting not to extend the Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans (CHNV) program, U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) said he believes Baldwin County will get a reprieve from a potential Haitian migrant influx.

Thursday, during remarks given to the Eastern Shore Republican Women's Club, the outgoing congressman acknowledged difficulties with getting more information about the resettlement of Haitian refugees throughout the country, particularly Baldwin County.

However, he also expressed his skepticism that an influx was imminent, as some have claimed.

"I have dealt with every one of these elected officials here in some fashion or form in the last two weeks. We can find out nothing. Absolutely nothing. All I can say is you have to trust us to keep an eye on it, and we are. And how we're doing that — we're asking all the right questions, we're just not getting any answers. It's just like any echo chamber. I did read an article, and I could not go back and find it, I apologize, that [said] they are suspending that program until after January. if that's the case, God bless them. But ... right now, I just don't see that thousand immigrants coming into Baldwin County. I just don't see it."
