If you’ve been following the news lately, you’ve likely read about President Donald Trump’s desire to take back control of the Panama Canal. While this may seem completely random, taking back control of the Panama Canal is hugely important to the security and economic success of the United States because we are the number one user of the canal (more than 70% of its traffic is heading to or from American ports). The Panama Canal is also critical for our Navy’s rapid deployment.

Since construction of the Panama Canal was completed by the United States in 1914, this 51-mile waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans has been a vital artery for global trade. After its construction, the United States controlled the canal and the surrounding Panama Canal Zone until the Torrijos-Carter Treaties gave control to Panama in 1977. This was a foolish move by then-President Jimmy Carter to surrender this vital asset to Panama. Unfortunately, Panama has now given away much of their control to countries like China and Russia.

Just a few months ago, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville and I visited the Panama Canal and the Panama Canal Zone to learn more about the issues there and exactly what’s at stake if we don’t regain control. In recent years, China has exploited the surrounding region and has been sinking cash into vulnerable communities in the area so they can buy their way into influence. Not long after our visit, Tuberville pointed out in a hearing that China has signed more than 30 contracts with the Panamanians. I’m sure this number will continue to grow in the coming years if we don’t do something to stop it.

Another huge issue in the surrounding region is an area called the Darién Gap, which is the border between Panama and Colombia. This extremely diverse, rugged region has become a hotspot for ISIS terrorists and tens of millions of illegal immigrants making the northern trek toward the United States. This uncontrolled, mass flow of illegal immigrants and terrorists poses a huge threat to the safety and security of the United States.

Trump is absolutely right that the United States needs to regain control of the Panama Canal. It is in our best interest to guarantee the operations of the Panama Canal are safe, secure, and efficient. We must always put the United States first and do all we can to counter Chinese aggression at home and abroad.
