During a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Huntsville) accused Democrats of "putting politics over the security of our nation" as they block funding for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

According to Strong, liberal efforts to shut down DHS could have a major impact on this summer's FIFA World Cup.

"We are less than 100 days away from hosting the world's largest sporting event featuring 104 matches across 16 cities, equivalent to three Super Bowls a day for five weeks, and Democrats continue to put politics over the security of our nation," Strong stated. "All members will be given another chance to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security this week. I look forward to voting for a third time, along with my Republican colleagues, to fully fund the department and each of your agencies."

The legislator praised U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees at Huntsville International Airport for their perseverance amid the chaos, while noting that other airports of similar size have not received the same level of "community support" as Huntsville amid the shutdown.

"I'm especially grateful to the TSA workforce at Huntsville International Airport, where operations are continuing, albeit at a little slower pace, despite the challenges and fiscal strain caused by the shutdown," said Strong. "However, not every small airport has the same level of community support."
