U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) joined other House Democrats on Thursday to introduce the Stopping a Rogue President on Trade Act, a bill that would reverse President Donald Trump's tariffs on foreign countries.

Trump announced a 90-day pause on some tariffs on Wednesday, except those on China. Alabama Congressional Republicans have backed Trump's trade policies so far despite a recent stock market downturn. Trump has argued the revenue from the tariffs can be used to attract industries back to America and increase revenue for tax cuts.

The bill introduced by Sewell and other Democrats would:

  • Turn off the global tariffs imposed on April 2: The bill would permanently turn off the new baseline tariffs of 10 percent for all countries as well as the increases in tariffs for 60 trading partners, such as Europe, Israel, Japan, South Korea and Kenya. This would return most rates to the levels they were before the president's tariff announcement.
  • Turn off the tariffs imposed by executive order for Mexico and Canada.
  • Require congressional approval for all new tariffs.
