U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) recently criticized the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic games after a drag queen rendition of Leonardo da Vinci's famous Last Supper painting.
The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, France, started with an immediate controversy after a racy drag queen dance routine and a drag depiction of the Last Supper.
Several events in the opening ceremony drew attention to the Olympics' opening night. Several drag queens carried the Olympic torch, followed by others participating in a flamboyant dance routine. However, the display that drew the most outrage across social media was a tableau of Jesus's Last Supper.
The depiction was a cheap parody of the universally recognized painting by the famed Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, in which a morbidly obese, tattooed person donning a bedazzled headdress designed to look like a halo.
Later on, a half-naked man wearing blue paint was lowered onto the table, apparently depicting the Greek god Dionysus.
The display drew swift outrage from hundreds across social media, including Alabama's junior Senator.
In a post on X, Britt called the presentation an "intentional choice to mock Christianity," later asking presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris to condemn the action.
"This was an intentional choice to mock Christianity and Christians," Britt said. "It's disgraceful. And it's the same kind of bizarre craziness that's being pushed on children and teenagers across America. We need to turn our eyes back to God and restore common sense."
The call for Vice President Kamala Harris to condemn the Olympic display comes on the same day she appeared on the season finale of "RuPaul's Drag Race," so the odds of Harris denouncing the drag queen Last Supper are scant at best.
Britt provided further commentary to 1819 News, saying her excitement to see the opening ceremonies was immediately quenched by the pushing of a "divisive agenda."
"I had been excited to watch the Olympics with my family," Britt said. "But instead of allowing this to be about the athletes—how hard they've trained, their immense determination and perseverance—the left has once again abused what should be a unifying, nonpartisan moment to push their radical, divisive agenda."
