When President Biden first took office, he immediately began dismantling our southern border. And he hasn’t stopped. The President has taken 94 executive actions to destroy our immigration system, ranging from ending the successful “remain-in-Mexico” program to selling taxpayer-funded border wall materials for pennies on the dollar. The radical left-wing policies of Joe Biden, his “border czar” Vice President Kamala Harris, and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, have directly caused the worst border crisis in U.S. history.
How bad is it at the border? In three years of the Biden administration, there have been 8.8 million border crossings, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. For comparison, Alabama’s population is five million. Hundreds of terror watchlist members have crossed the border, and there are likely many more who crossed without getting arrested. Illegal aliens are invading our country at record rates, bringing gangs, human traffickers, and dangerous drugs like fentanyl into our communities. More than 100,000 Americans die every year because of drugs that came over our Southern Border. We cannot keep standing by as American lives are put at risk.
Under the Biden administration, every state is a border state. Just a few weeks ago, I met with a group of Alabama sheriffs. They are overrun all across our state. Overrun by drugs, criminals, and illegal aliens; the list goes on and on. This crisis impacts every sector of American society.
The open border is a national security crisis, and it is beyond time that the Biden administration is held accountable. Over the past few years, I have introduced and joined numerous pieces of legislation to discourage illegal immigration and enact solutions that secure the nation. The Border Safety and Security Act would require the Secretary of Homeland Security to suspend the entry of illegal immigrants until the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regains “operational control” of the border and gives state attorneys general the legal power to sue DHS if they fail to secure the border. The Southern Border Transparency Act would force the Biden administration to increase its reporting data around illegal immigrants entering the country. My first piece of legislation as a U.S. Senator focused on the influx of illegal aliens invading our country and being released without an immigration court date.
The American people demand, and deserve, that those responsible for this border crisis be held accountable. The U.S. House of Representatives recently impeached Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas for his failure to carry out the law. He deserves it — and the Senate should remove him from office as soon as possible.
