Morgan Murphy, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in 2026 in Alabama and a former Trump administration official, called on Sunday for the National Guard to be sent to Montgomery, similar to other blue cities across the nation.

Downtown Montgomery was the site of a deadly shootout late Saturday night that left two dead and fourteen injured. President Donald Trump has or is in the process of sending National Guard troops to Washington D.C., Portland, Chicago, Memphis and Los Angeles.

Murphy told 1819 News on Sunday, “In the same way that Washington, D.C. is the front door to the nation, Montgomery is the front door to Alabama. It should be a shining example of a safe, clean, orderly city.

“There’s no excuse for blue cities in red states to be war zones. We need the National Guard in Montgomery to restore long-awaited law and order,” Murphy said. “For over 50 years, Republicans have looked the other way as Democrats drove our once shining cities into the ground, and it took President Trump to show how that could be fixed, and I hope Alabama follows his lead.”
