Bringing in the National Guard to Montgomery isn’t necessary, according to businessman and U.S. Senate candidate Rodney Walker.

Walker is seeking the Republican nomination in a crowded field of candidates for U.S. Senate in 2026.

Walker said on Facebook on Monday, “This past weekend, not just one, but three major events occurred within six blocks in Montgomery, interrupted by two individuals with guns. The violence was completely unnecessary, and our thoughts are with the families and community affected. As we respond to this tragedy, I want to share my perspective as someone whose wife, Stacie, dedicated 22 years to teaching in the Alabama school system. Her experience has given our family a firsthand understanding of the challenges our children face today.”

“Exposure to violence in media, video games, and our communities plays a significant role in shaping behavior. Many children are unsupervised in what they watch or play, and some of these tools are being used as substitutes for proper parenting. This early exposure teaches them that violence is an acceptable way to solve problems. Mental health also plays a critical role, and we must do more to support our children in this area. Faith and values are equally important in education. Removing God from our schools takes away an opportunity for children to learn about morality and respect. Programs like religious clubs historically provided guidance, structure, and lessons in character, and we should encourage their presence once again,” Walker said.

“We must focus first on instilling religious and moral values, supporting our teachers, and reinforcing discipline, respect, and personal responsibility both at homes and in schools. Parents must take an active role in raising their children rather than relying solely on screens or digital devices. “Regarding law enforcement, I do not believe bringing in the National Guard is necessary. Our local, state, and federal law enforcement officers–including the Montgomery Police Department, Montgomery Sheriff’s Department, ALEA, and US Marshals–are highly qualified and fully capable of keeping our citizens safe. Unfortunately, policies like defunding the police have weakened support for those who protect us. I strongly back the blue and believe these officers, with proper funding and resources, will swiftly bring the criminals responsible for this weekend’s violence to justice. Our state needs to get back to instilling Godly values, supporting teachers, and fully resourcing our law enforcement so they can keep our communities safe.”
