U.S. Sens. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) and Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) recently applauded the Wednesday announcement from the Food and Drug Administration that it was banning Red Dye No. 3 for use in America’s food supply.
FDA officials granted a 2022 petition filed by two dozen food safety and health advocates urging the agency to revoke authorization for the substance that adds artificial colors to some processed foods.
In December, Tuberville questioned FDA officials on Red Dye No. 3, pointing to the perceived disconnect in FDA policy since the dye’s use was already banned in American cosmetics after animal trials showed a risk for cancer.
Both Tuberville and Britt have begun campaigning with the “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) slogan of President-elect Donald Trump’s HHS secretary pick, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
Food manufacturers will have until January 2027 to remove the dye from their products, while makers of ingested drugs have until January 2028 to do the same. Other countries still allow for certain uses of the dye, but imported foods must meet the new U.S. requirement.
On Wednesday, Tuberville told reporters he was thrilled with the announcement, saying it was a good first step in RFK’s MAHA agenda.
“It’s definitely a step in the right direction,” Tuberville said. “We gotta make our food safe, and it shouldn't be a Republican or Democrat issue. It's an American issue. A lot of young people, including my two sons, really got involved in this last election because of food safety and health. I raised the issue of harmful chemicals like Red [Dye No.] 3 and Red [Dye No.] 40 in one of my hearings with an FDA official last month, and it's ridiculous that we are allowing harmful chemicals in our food that we won't even allow in cosmetics.”
He continued, “I’m glad that FDA woke up and to the fact that Red [Dye No.] 3 shouldn't be in our food, and I look forward to working with RFK Jr. on more ways we can make America Healthy Again in the very near future after he's confirmed.”
Britt also applauded the FDA decision, saying she was “looking forward to working with the Trump Admin to put America on a stronger, healthier path.”
To Make America Health Again we need to continue elevating U.S. food standards to ensure our kids and families are better off. Banning Red Dye No. 3 is a step in the right direction, and I’m looking forward to working with the Trump Admin to put America on a stronger, healthier… https://t.co/abOVUMvUAi
