On Monday, UAB athletics director Mark Ingram addressed the Saturday incident in which a Blazers player allegedly stabbed two teammates at the Football Operations Center just hours before their game with USF.
Offensive lineman Daniel Mincey was booked into Jefferson County Jail at 12:40 p.m. on Saturday. He was charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder.
Ingram provided insight into why UAB moved forward with playing the game and commended interim head coach Alex Mortensen and his staff for how they "handled a very difficult situation."
“Saturday was a very sad day for UAB football and for UAB athletics,” Ingram said on Monday. “And before Coach Mortensen comes up, I just wanted to thank him and his staff and the team for how they handled a very difficult situation."
"We recognize the gravity of what happened Saturday morning and did very seriously consider not playing the game. That was not an easy decision. But it was only after we knew that the injured players were stable and after Coach was able to have a very honest and caring conversation with our team that we felt comfortable with the game going on.”
Mortensen spoke after Ingram and revealed that he had visited the two victims, who have both been released from the hospital and are recovering. The coach said that the recent days had been "difficult" for everyone around the program.
