UAB football coach Trent Dilfer got a start on putting his first coaching staff together on the Southside, according to media reports. Alex Mortensen will serve as Dilfer’s offensive coordinator and Reilly Jeffers will be the tight ends coach.

He served as a graduate assistant and offensive analyst for the Crimson Tide, leaving at one point to join the Birmingham Iron staff in the Alliance of American Football. Mortensen has played a key role in developing the quarterbacks at Alabama. He was also the passing game coordinator at New Mexico Highlands for two seasons and was a coaching assistant with the St. Louis Rams in 2013. Mortensen played quarterback at Arkansas and Samford.
The addition of Jeffers was first reported by The Athletic. Jeffers is a program assistant serving with the offense at Ohio State. He coached in 2020 under Dilfer at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville and also served on the FAU staff.
