UAB football coach Trent Dilfer nearly put the finishing touches on his first recruiting class on Wednesday.

Eight players, all from high school, signed national letters of intent on National Signing Day. One more is expected, but it probably won’t come until Thursday morning. Sixteen players signed in December and 10 other scholarship players enrolled in school as midyear transfers. Put it all together and Dilfer, currently has 34 additions to his first roster.

Plenty of needs were met, particularly on the offensive and defensive line. UAB added three offensive linemen and four defensive linemen on Wednesday. Overall, the Blazers brought in six offensive linemen and eight players who will play on the defensive line.

Dilfer said the key to bringing in a quality class was in the approach.

“I’m more and more impressed with the people in the building, each and every day,” Dilfer said. “I really believe that’s what the kids saw. As the kids came in our building, yes, they loved the fact a strong foundation has been laid here. We have great facilities, we have great resources. But, more important than any of that, they all spoke about how they saw the staff getting along, how it felt like a family, how we were honest with them. I think that’s the biggest thing that came out of recruiting was there was no sales pitch. The conversation around recruiting was not, ‘What are we selling.’ It’s who are you, who are we. Let’s make sure they see that and there’s authenticity to it.”
