UAB will play host to another NIT game on Sunday afternoon. Morehead State, which upset Clemson, will come to Bartow Arena for a Sweet 16 with tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m.
Morehead State advanced by erasing a 15-point Clemson advantage in the first half, using a late surge to take a seven-point lead and holding on down the stretch for the 68-64 win at Clemson on Wednesday. It was the first NIT win in school history for the Eagles.
With the win, Morehead State improved to 22-11. The Eagles were the Ohio Valley Conference champions but dropped a 65-58 decision to Southeast Missouri State in the OVC Tournament semifinals. The Eagles had received a bye until that point, so that was their first tournament game.
OVC Player of the Year Mark Freeman, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound senior, averages 15.1 points, 3.7 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game. He had 19 points, four assists and two steals in the win over Clemson. Alex Gross, a 6-foot-10, 250-pound graduate student, averaged 16 points and nine rebounds per game. Gross was the OVC Defensive Player of the Year. Shooting guard Drew Thelwell, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound sophomore, is the only other double-figure scorer at 11 points per game.
UAB advanced to the Sweet 16 with an 88-60 win over Southern Miss on Tuesday.
