A University of Alabama doctoral student was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Tuesday.

According to The Crimson White, Alireza Doroudi, a mechanical engineering doctoral student from Iran, was arrested by ICE agents at 5 a.m. at his home Tuesday.

According to a message in a group chat that included Iranian students obtained by the outlet, Doroudi entered the country on an F-1 student visa in January 2023.

Douroudi's visa was revoked six months after he arrived in the United States, but the International Student and Scholar Services at the University of Alabama stated that Doroudi could stay in the United States legally as long as he maintained his student status, according to the message obtained by The Crimson White.

An Alireza Doroudi from Iran is listed on ICE's online locator as in ICE custody but doesn't list where he's being detained.

Alex House, a spokesperson for the University of Alabama, said in a statement on Wednesday, "The University of Alabama recently learned that a doctoral student has been detained off campus by federal immigration authorities."

"Federal privacy laws limit what can be shared about an individual student. International students studying at the University are valued members of the campus community, and International Student and Scholar Services is available to assist international students who have questions. UA has and will continue to follow all immigration laws and cooperate with federal authorities," House said.

A spokesperson for ICE didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from 1819 News.

According to court records, Doroudi pleaded guilty in November 2023 in Tuscaloosa County traffic court to speeding 25 miles per hour or more.
