A University of Alabama student was killed in a New Year’s terror attack in New Orleans, according to the university.

UA president Stuart Bell confirmed Kareem Badawi was among 15 killed when a man drove a truck through the French Quarter.

“I learned today that Kareem Badawi, one of our students at The University of Alabama, was killed in the terrorist attack in New Orleans,” Bell said in a statement. “I grieve alongside family and friends of Kareem in their heartbreaking loss.”

The university is offering counseling to students.

The FBI said the suspected driver of the truck was Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42, of Texas. The U.S. Army veteran had an Islamic State flag on the truck. He was shot dead by police.

Investigators believe a second person was working with Jabbar. An explosive device and firearms were found in the vehicle.

Dozens were injured, including two police officers.

“This is not just an act of terrorism. This is evil,” New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said.

New Orleans postponed the Sugar Bowl until Thursday to ensure the safety of visitors.

Investigators are also working to determine if a Tesla Cybertruck explosion that killed one and injured seven in front of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas is connected to the New Orleans attack.
