Facing an $8 million deficit, the University of Montevallo (UM) Board of Trustees voted Friday morning to discontinue nine minors and seven concentrations.
Wesley Hallman, executive director of marketing and communications at UM, told WVTM13, "With the elimination of these academic minors and concentrations, and the approval of the new fees that were instituted, that adds up to about $800,000."
Among those cut was the Peace and Justice Studies program, which, according to the school's website, "examines causes and consequences of economic disparity, institutionalized inequality, and strategies of peace building and conflict resolution."
The African American Studies program was also cut. According to the school's website, the first core concept of the major is: "Gain insight into the historical and contemporary struggles and triumphs of people of African descent through studying the effects and implications of racism, inequality, and injustice."
Minors cut included:
- African American Studies
- Cybersecurity
- Economics
- Latin American Studies
- Management Information Systems
