Advocates for women's equality in sports won a significant victory Tuesday when the University of Pennsylvania announced it would strip the medals won by transgender athlete Lia Thomas and award them to the rightful female winners, along with a formal apology.

The move comes as part of a deal with the Trump administration in a civil rights case. The school has agreed to restore all titles to female athletes that were "misappropriated" by male competitors, The Daily Wire reported.

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), who has been on the frontlines of the battle over men competing in women's sports, said UPenn's actions now were "insufficient."

"Unless they have a Time Machine to go back in time and give [Riley Gaines] the trophy, this is INSUFFICIENT," Coach posted on X.

Gaines lost her trophy to Thomas in 2022 at an NCAA tournament, prompting Gaines to become an advocate for keeping men out of women's sports.
