The City of Vestavia announced on Tuesday the death of long-time police chief Danny P. Rary.

Rary was with the City of Vestavia Hills for 42 years. Officials did not release information on Rary’s death and said no further comments would be made.

“With the strong support of the community, city staff and elected officials, the Vestavia Hills Police family will continue to embody the vision and direction of Chief Rary,” the police department posted on Facebook. “His leadership has forever left an impression on the members of this department and the Vestavia Hills community.”

Rary began his career in law enforcement in 1978 and began work in Vestavia in 1981. He became chief in 2011.

The Vestavia Hills Police Department has 109 sworn officers.
