Firefighters from Centreville, Brent and Brierfield worked to extinguish a fire at AmeriGas off Belcher Road in Centreville on Friday.

AmeriGas sells and delivers propane gas. Thousands of propane tanks are stored on the property.

Residents reported hearing an explosion but the cause of the fire has not been determined.

Amy Hicks said the explosion shook the ground.

“So glad everyone was able to evacuate in time and that the firefighters and first responders were there quickly after it started,” Hicks posted on Facebook. “Praying for all, because it definitely was a scary situation.”

The area was cleared as firefighters battled the blaze. It was contained around 3:30 p.m.

The walking track and the BMC Wellness Center remained closed for the rest of the day.
