Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis called on a local war hero during the city council meeting on Tuesday as he presented a proclamation observing May 16 Armed Forces Day.
“Whereas our courageous and vigilant armed forces safeguard the blessings of liberty for us and for future generations by selflessly answering the call of duty,” the proclamation reads. “And whereas through their strength and dedication to our country, they protect our freedoms, interests, and our way of life at duty stations all around the world.”
Cheriogotis said Armed Forces Day is a patriotic holiday for citizens to honor military heroes.
Vietnam veteran U.S. Army Col. Patrick H. Downing (Ret.) thanked Cheriogotis and the City Council for supporting veterans. Downing serves as the president of the South Alabama Veterans Organization.
“We represent the seven counties of South Alabama,” Downing said. “We always appreciate the support from the City Council and the City of Mobile for our efforts.”
