Lieutenant gubernatorial candidate John Wahl reacted to an attack ad from his opponent, Wes Allen's campaign, apparently for social media, which featured an AI-generated raccoon claiming to be Wahl's live-in pet and reciting previous political attacks from the Allen campaign.

The ad features Wahl's pet raccoon Charlie, who "lives with him in his house" and "sleeps with him in his bed."

Charlie then repeats multiple previous attacks levied against Wahl, including that he used a "fake ID to cheat in elections," "refused to vote for Trump" and "celebrated Ramadan in a Muslim mosque."

The ad was met with confusion on social media over the choice to use an AI raccoon in a political ad. Others expressed discomfort at the insinuation tied to this anthropomorphized mammal, claiming to sleep in Wahl's bed.

For Wahl, the ad could have been funny had it not been for that insinuation. However, he was innately amused by the ad.

According to Wahl, he has never owned a raccoon, but his current fiancée owned one prior. That appears to be the case, since the raccoon has its own social media page that features Wahl's fiancée. However, there has not been a post on the page since 2021.

"I just find the whole thing weird and creepy," Wahl said. "I don't think I even have a picture in my entire life with a raccoon."

Wahl took the ad in stride. However, he used it as an opportunity to draw a stark distinction between his and Allen's campaigns.

"Wes Allen's campaign has officially gone off the rails," Wahl said. "I've never owned a raccoon, and I honestly don't understand how any professional campaign could come up with something this ridiculous."

"I do have to admit that I had a hard time not laughing when I first saw the ad. However, I think this ad does highlight a very big difference in the race for Lieutenant Governor. With just days left before we vote on one of the most important positions in Alabama, Wes Allen's closing message is not about cutting taxes, fighting for families, or standing up for Alabama values. Bizarrely, it's about an AI raccoon. And to be honest, that should tell voters everything," Wahl said.

He concluded, "I am focused on the people of Alabama and how we can make government better serve them. Wes Allen is focused on fake animals, childish gimmicks, and desperate lies. The Lieutenant Governor's race is serious, and the challenges facing Alabama families are serious. This ad clearly shows that Wes Allen's campaign and their childish attacks are not."

Allen and Wahl are slated to face one another in the Republican primary runoff election on Tuesday to determine the party's nominee in the November general election.
