Parts of North Alabama were rocked Monday evening by a magnitude 2.4 earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the earthquake epicenter was in the small town of Sipsey in Walker County. Sipsey is about 13 miles east of Jasper.

Sandra Carter Chamness lives about six miles from the epicenter. She and several others reported hearing a rumbling explosion sound around 10 p.m.

“Shook me, lol; it shook the bed and moved a few pictures hanging on the wall. I was going to check with the Earthquake page when I got up this morning and just saw this," she said.

The depth of the earthquake is estimated to be 1.8 km, or just over a mile deep.
