The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has removed all of the toll plaza from the Baldwin Beach Express bridge.

Crews cheered as the plaza canopy came down early Tuesday.

After the demolished pieces are cleared from the roadway, crews will apply an asphalt overlay. After it cures for 10 days, which is expected to be complete by July 2, permanent striping will be placed on the roadway.

Lane shifts will take place during the roadwork, but no closures are expected.

ALDOT purchased the bridge from the Baldwin County Bridge Company (BCBC), ending a lawsuit filed by BCBC claiming the state was going to put them out of business with a new bridge being built over the Intercoastal Waterway. That bridge is expected to be completed in 18 months. At that time, the plan is to make the new bridge southbound only and the Beach Express Bridge will become northbound only.
