During Wednesday's Alabama State Senate County and Municipal Government Committee hearing, State Sens. Greg Albritton (R-Range) and Chris Elliott (R-Josephine) had a contentious back-and-forth over Senate Bill 270 (SB270), sponsored by State Sen. April Weaver (R-Brierfield).
The statewide bill is a part of the larger dispute underway in Baldwin County between the Baldwin County Public School system and the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach municipal school systems.
At stake is a share of Baldwin County's 40% one-cent sales tax between the three school systems.
Under the current arrangement, education sales tax recipients collected in the two Baldwin County beach municipalities are sent to the county system instead of their school systems.
An earlier version of the bill brought by Elliott and State Rep. Francis Holk-Jones (R-Foley) would have applied to only Baldwin County.
The committee ultimately voted to carry the bill over with a stated objective of settling the matter locally.
