GUNTERSVILLE — On Tuesday, the two Republican candidates for U.S. Senate offered differing opinions on ending the filibuster.
Many Republican leaders, including President Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), have been calling on Congress to end the filibuster to advance key legislation, such as the popular Save America Act.
Former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson, who is facing U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) in the June 16 runoff, said during a meeting with the Marshall County Republican Club on Tuesday that he was against ending the filibuster but supported holding lawmakers accountable and forcing them to debate. Hudson made similar comments in April, saying the filibuster was a valuable "shield."
“The president makes an unbelievably great case as the executive branch on why we should nuke the filibuster,” he said. “With that being said, the only conservative tool is to make sure that we end the silent filibuster. Right now, Senators can signal a filibuster and go play golf, go out to eat, do whatever they want. That is not conservatism. That is not positive. That is actually blocking legislation that the American people want passed. On the other hand, if we completely do away with a filibuster, we no longer have a shield to protect the minority.”
Hudson said it was a matter of time before Democrats took control in Washington, and without the filibuster in place, they’ll be able to force through their radical agenda unimpeded.
Moore argued that Republicans needed to “nuke” the filibuster now and secure some legislative wins before Democrats took back control and removed the filibuster themselves to their advantage.
“We need to nuke the filibuster right now. I’m with the president, and I’m with Coach. We need to nuke the filibuster right now,” Moore said. “The only reason Democrats didn’t do it was Joe Manchin and Kristen Cinema. They are no longer in the Senate as Democrats. The next time the Democrats get the Senate, they’re going to nuke the filibuster, we’re going to have two new senators in Washington, D.C., they’re going to stack the courts and they’re going to steal your liberties. So we need to nuke it and nuke it now.”
