Friday on Huntsville radio WVNN's "The Dale Jackson Show," State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) offered his best guess on what could happen if President Donald Trump is successful in his bid to close the U.S. Department of Education.
The Decatur lawmaker discussed two scenarios, one of which involves funding directly to the state or the federal government and completely cutting the states off.
"Well, I would think it would probably be, if it happens, there would be some kind of federal block grant program to the states for education, and we do with it what we will," he explained. "Right now, the feds try to control every darn dollar with strings attached and try to dictate where the money goes. Or they could just cut us off altogether and say, you're on your own, figure it out. And if they did that, you know, we'd soldier on. We'd do what we have to do to educate the children of the state."
