U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville), a member of the America250 Commission, visited Independence Hall in Philadelphia on Thursday to mark the occasion.
On Thursday's broadcast of Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5's "The Jeff Poor Show," Aderholt said that he was accompanied by about 30 fellow legislators from both parties to the historic location.
"I was honored to be on the commission. I'd say about 18 to 20 commissioners across the nation have been a part of planning the different festivities, and they're all across the country, not one single place," explained Aderholt.
"One of the things taking place is that a group of members of Congress are going up to Independence Hall," he added. "We are going to pull right in there near Independence Hall, and we're going to have a little ceremonial event. Then we're going to sign a document. I assume it'll be something reaffirming the principles of the Declaration. Last I've heard, there are about 30 or so members of Congress who are going up."
Aderholt continued, "We're not voting today, so it allows members to be able to go up there and then make the quick trip to the Liberty Bell across the street. Then we're back here in Washington tonight. That's what my day looks like. I wanted to be a part of this ceremony. No better place in Washington than to be in Philadelphia for the semicentennial, America's 250."The legislator credited America's founding fathers with a "remarkable" feat on July 4, 1776.
"In the Declaration of Independence, the founders talked about a more perfect union. They never talked about it being a perfect union, but a more perfect union. We've come a long way. What those founders did back in 1776 is just remarkable, and 250 years later, we're celebrating our independence and the greatest country in the world," added Aderholt.
