According to recent data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), foreign entities own about 2.2 million acres in Alabama with an original purchase value of nearly $1.6 billion. Foreign purchases of Alabama land where the entity doesn’t specify their country of origin amount to 451,828 acres with an estimated $787 million value at time of purchase.

According to the USDA, the foreign entities with the most land in Alabama are: 

  • Netherlands (734,632 acres with an estimated purchase value of $374 million)
  • Canada (339,943 acres with an estimated purchase value of $106 million)
  • Ireland (217,937 acres with an estimated purchase value of $0)
  • Denmark (176,858 acres with an estimated purchase value of $191 million)
  • Luxembourg (94,303 acres with an estimated purchase value of $0)

The counties in Alabama with 15% or more of their land owned by foreign entities are:

  • Butler County (54%)
  • Lowndes County (25%)
  • Crenshaw County (22%)
  • Conecuh County (21%)
  • Marion County (21%)
  • Monroe County (19%)
  • Coosa County (19%)
  • Bullock County (17%)
  • Washington County (16%)
  • Autauga County (15%)
