Speculation surrounds the 2025 Mobile mayoral election and who will put their name in the hat.

Following Mayor Sandy Stimpson’s announcement that he would not run for re-election, possible candidates were discussed among political circles in the Port City. It appears there will be a large selection of options for voters.

Former Police Chief Paul Prine, former Police Chief Lawrence Battiste, Councilman William Carroll, and Stimpson’s chief of staff, James Barber, were among those speculated.

There are also those who have been in the political world and run successful campaigns, such as U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile), who lost his last campaign to U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise). Carl’s current term ends in January.

Although they haven’t made official announcements, State Sen. Vivian Figures (D-Mobile) and State Rep. Barbara Drummond (D-Mobile) are rumored to be considering a race.

District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis, who has publicly criticized Stimpson and Prine, could be in the running. Cheriogotis previously commented on police policy after a press conference where City officials blamed a backlog in the court on rising crime. He said blaming judges for crime was “childish.”

Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson made a $158,200 principal campaign transfer to the new “Connie Hudson Campaign” account, leading some to believe she is planning a mayoral run fresh off her 2024 re-election.

Former Mobile Councilman and County Commissioner Stephen “Steve” Nodine unofficially announced his candidacy for mayor but told 1819 News he still has some issues to address before he makes it official.

A recent poll asking who voters would support also included attorney and shareholder of Maynard Nexsen’s Government Solutions Practice Raymond Bell.

Candidates must be 25 years of age or older and must live in the city at least 90 days before the election date.

The last day to qualify for the 2025 municipal elections is June 24. Election Day is August 26.
