Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth opted in May against running for governor in 2026 against U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn).

Six months later, is he now thinking about joining the Senate race?

Current Republican candidates in the field include Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), Jared Hudson, Morgan Murphy, and Rodney Walker.

Ainsworth is term-limited from seeking another term as lieutenant governor.

“Hearing from a lot of people that the U.S. Senate race seems wide open right now,” Ainsworth said Tuesday on Facebook. “What do you think?”

Qualifying for the Republican primary in 2026 is less than a month away, with the filing period opening on January 5 and closing on January 23.

Ainsworth didn’t return a request for comment from 1819 News about his plans for 2026.
