The Decatur Police Department is investigating a deadly incident in a Walmart parking lot.
Sherry Sain was struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of the store located at 1203 6th Avenue SE. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
After investigating, police arrested a man and charged him with murder after they said he purposefully ran over the woman. The suspect was identified as Preston Lamar Nelson, 33, of Huntsville.
Police said Nelson pulled into a handicap spot in the parking lot and sat in his vehicle until the victim walked behind him.
"When Sain was directly behind Nelson's vehicle, he accelerated rapidly, striking Sain," police said in a press release. "Nelson continued to accelerate until he struck another vehicle. After striking Sain and the second vehicle, Nelson attempted to flee the scene but was stopped by a civilian at which point his vehicle became inoperable."
Investigators said there is no known connection between the suspect and the victim.
Nelson was booked into the Morgan County Jail on a $500,000 cash bond.
