Birmingham Fire & Rescue personnel risked their lives early Thursday to pull a woman from a house fire on the city’s west side. Despite their efforts, the woman later died at the hospital.

Jefferson County Coroner Bill Yates said police and fire responded to the fire in the 1200 block of 4th Terrace West at 1:26 a.m. Firefighters went inside the home and rescued 71-year-old Sharon Ellis Bowie.

Firefighter personnel rushed Bowie to UAB Hospital, where doctors worked to save her life. Bowie was pronounced dead at 7:50 a.m.

The Birmingham Fire & Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
