On Wednesday, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin endorsed Phillip Ensler for lieutenant governor. The endorsement comes less than a year after Ensler publicly announced that he wasn't running for reelection and intended to move home to New York.

In December, six months after that announcement, Ensler reversed course and filed to run for lieutenant governor.

"I am Randall Woodfin, and I proudly serve as mayor of the city of Birmingham. I'm so excited that Representative Ensler is running for lieutenant governor.
I've watched his career as a state representative. And what I like about him is that his fierce advocacy, to fight for all, to want to support all, all Alabamians. That is what we need now, right now, in this moment, as it relates to the direction of the state, whether it's our healthcare or gainful employment for everyday Alabamians, this is the type of advocate and fighter we need," Woodfin said.

Ensler faces Darryl D. Perryman in the May 19 primary.
