Dangerous currents have prompted the closure of waters off Alabama’s coast a total of six days this year. Double red flags signal closures due to dangerous rip currents. When a swimmer becomes distressed, resources are expended and first responders are put at risk, prompting residents to ask whether enough is being done.

GULF SHORES — Double-red flags are flying along the beach, meaning the water is closed. A high surf advisory is in effect at least through Saturday, with 4 to 6 feet surf conditions, according to Beach Safety Chief Joethan Phillips.

Each year, Gulf Shores Fire-Rescue responds to more than 300 water rescues. The department lives up to the city’s motto, “Small Town, Big Beach.”
