
The House County and Municipal Government Committee gave a bill giving local control over library board appointments and removals a favorable report, with two amendments.

John Wahl, the chairman of the Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) Board and the Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP), sent a formal letter on Wednesday to public library directors across the state, informing them that the APLS Board will stand behind President Donald Trump’s executive order banning the use of federal funds to promote gender ideology.

The Alabama Public Library Service executive board voted on Thursday to reinstate a policy allowing a competitive bid process for local libraries to receive federal grant funds, much to the chagrin of APLS director Nancy Pack.

Governor Kay Ivey stands by her decision to enter the inflammatory fray of Alabama’s ongoing library debate, a move that led to a sweeping series of rule changes regulating how libraries can purchase and display sexually explicit or obscene material meant for minors.

The move comes after the library cooperative board fired all employees in May.

The Baldwin County Commission is investigating the firing of the entire Baldwin County Library Cooperative (BCLC) staff.
