The City of Orange Beach gets 30 cents per car that travels across the Intercoastal Waterway via the Beach Express toll bridge. The fact that the city gets money from the toll has been a talking point for those supporting a new taxpayer-paid bridge nearby.
Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon spoke for the first time Tuesday after a Supreme Court of Alabama ruling that will allow the building of a new bridge in Gulf Shores to continue. He said he wants to clear up misconceptions and he hopes the expensive bridge project doesn't take away from other transportation needs in the city.
