Gov. Kay Ivey on Wednesday signed a bill to set specific timelines that public entities in Alabama must follow when responding to public records requests into law on Wednesday.
The Senate County and Municipal Government Committee passed a bill by State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) on Tuesday that sets deadlines for responses to public records requests for government documents.
Alabamians have a right to know the activities that state government is engaged in and how their tax dollars are being spent. Yet Senate Bill 196, which would have further streamlined the public records process, died on the last day of the 2023 regular session.
