That Adams and Jefferson should die on July 4, 1826, a half-century after the Declaration's adoption, seems almost too fitting to be true. The two men who helped define American independence left the world together on the anniversary of the nation's birth they helped midwife.

The Declaration is less an argument invented than a mind discovered, a consciousness arriving at self-knowledge through its own prose.

Whatever Jefferson became later in life, in 1776 he spoke as a Christian, wrote as a Christian, and apparently thought as a Christian. The Declaration must be understood as the work of the Jefferson of 1776, not the Jefferson of 1820.

What Jefferson didn’t say about religious freedom under the Constitution is just as important as what he did.

Before the Declaration of Independence, there was the Olive Branch Petition.

On this day 247 years ago, the American colonies declared their independence from the British crown and furthered a great struggle for separation that lasted slightly over six years and resulted in the creation of a new American republic.

On the Fourth of July we celebrate the American Revolution and those ideals which this country was built on which were best articulated in the Declaration of Independence.
