Perhaps a dark horse Heisman Trophy campaign was born on a sunny Saturday at Protective Stadium in UAB’s 35-21 victory over Georgia Southern. OK, that’s probably unneeded hyperbole, at least at this point. On this day, though, UAB running back DeWayne McBride was not only good, at times he was out of this world good.
The final goal – moving the chains and putting up points - is the same for both teams that will be in Protective Stadium on Saturday. The way that UAB and Georgia Southern go about chasing that goal, though, is considerably different.
After this season, UAB linebacker Tyler Taylor is out of college football opportunities. This is it. He is a sixth-year senior.
UAB was its own worst enemy in the first half of Saturday night’s game at Liberty. In the second half, for the second consecutive season, Liberty turned into bullies to walk away with a 21-14 victory in the rain over the Blazers at Williams Stadium.
Kyle Harrell is content with his role on the UAB football team. It seems like such a simple sentence, at least until you consider his complex journey through college football.
Trey Bedosky should have been nervous in the moments leading up to UAB’s season opener. The sophomore offensive lineman was not only preparing for his initial college football start but, at least for the first game, he was replacing NFL prospect Kadeem Telfort at left tackle. Those are some pretty big steps to fill.
The UAB defense is preparing to face Liberty’s offense. The Blazers are not preparing to play Malik Willis, who is earning NFL money with the Tennessee Titans. That’s good news.
Samford coach Chris Hatcher called the season opening win over No. 8 ranked Kennesaw State a team win. It certainly was that, but one of the most pleasant things about the win was the play of a revamped defense.
He will have tougher assignments during his first season as UAB football’s head coach. But it had to be hard for Bryant Vincent to stop smiling after his team opened the season with a 59-0 victory over Alabama A&M with a Protective Stadium crowd of 32,542 looking on.
Facing the unknown is often a tricky part of season opening college football games. Potentially facing 11 new starters on the opposing defense, which UAB could do on Thursday night against Alabama A&M takes unknown to a new level.
When it comes to football – whether he’s running an offense or running the entire team – routine is very important to Bryant Vincent.
Fred Farrier is going to be on both Protective Stadium sidelines in Thursday’s season opener between UAB and Alabama A&M.
Picking a signature UAB moment for DeWayne McBride Jr. is not a simple task, partly because there’s that feeling that the signature moment is still out there. Or, perhaps, because signature moments come with different definitions.
Iverson Hooks wanted to find his way onto the field in his first college football season.
Dylan Hopkins will start at quarterback for the UAB Blazers in the Sept. 1 season opener against Alabama A&M at Protective Stadium.
Former UAB football coach Bill Clark missing football is not exactly unexpected news. For nearly 35 years, he’s coached football. For a lot longer than that, as the son of a high school coach, he’s been around the game. It’s toward the end of August, which means fall camp for college teams has ended and the first game quickly approaching.
Bryce Damous and his fellow UAB tight end teammates know very well that their position comes complete with a question mark heading into the season.
Fall camp officially closed on Saturday night at Protective Stadium with UAB’s second and final scrimmage.
Jackson Bratton, who was fresh off two years in the University of Alabama football program, didn’t know what to expect when he arrived at UAB.
Dexter Boykin had specific future athletic plans when he first arrived at Fairfield High. “I thought I was going to be about 6-8 and go to Duke,” Boykin said.
Talking his way through a cornerback position filled with experience and talent to get into the playing rotation wasn’t an option. Colby Dempsey found an infallible option.
Ryan Davis was a full participant in UAB football practice on Monday morning.
Lee Witherspoon made an impact at running back during UAB’s first full-scale scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday.
UAB football interim head coach Bryant Vincent got what he wanted – balanced success - from his team’s first fall camp scrimmage on Saturday.
It all slowed down when Bryant Vincent heard the question. What does it mean for Kadeem Telfort to walk across the stage inside Bartow Arena on Saturday and receive his college diploma from UAB?
Trying to unseat a returning starter, while attempting to hold off two other quarterbacks striving to move up the depth chart, is fine with UAB’s Jacob Zeno.
Jaylen Key is in his fourth fall camp at UAB. At this point, he’s not only latched on to a spot in the rotation at a crowded safety position but he could very well be one of the starters. Key’s story is a testament that overnight sensations aren’t common in college football.
