FOLEY — A Baldwin County woman is spending Christmas thankful for those with a giving spirit.

Bethany Agee is no stranger to a giving spirit because she has one herself. She is donating a kidney to a New Hampshire teen she has never met.

Agee saw the need in a Facebook post earlier this year and went through the process to find out if she could be a donor. After several tests, she found out she was a direct match.

Following an 1819 News story on Agee's willingness to be a living kidney donor, the Alabama Kidney Foundation reached out to help.

Just in time for Christmas, Agee received a check to cover her travel, two nights in a hotel and food.

"Thank you so much to 1819 News for sharing my kidney donation story," Agee said. "Because of that, I am getting financial assistance. It was such a blessing and we are truly grateful to the Alabama Kidney Foundation for their support."

Agee spoke with her recipient for the first time this week. She said the young woman was thankful and said she hopes to be able to play field hockey next fall.

The surgery will take place at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. A nearby hotel offered Agee and her husband a special rate for two nights. Following the surgery, they will stay in Boston for three weeks. During that time, she will celebrate her 40th birthday.

Anyone who wants to donate may do so via Venmo @Bethany-Agee.
