The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts a very active Atlantic hurricane season, and communities along Alabama's Gulf Coast are already preparing.

NOAA is forecasting between 17 and 25 named storms, with eight to 13 hurricanes. The prediction is well above the 30-year average of 14 named storms.

Insurance companies suggest homeowners check their coverage before a hurricane.

"It's vital to check in with your insurance representative at least annually to discuss your coverages," said Jesse Kohlbecker, vice president of Claims and Client Services at COUNTRY Financial. "There are many changes that can occur in a year that impact your insurance coverage needs, like upgrades you made to your home or changes in your lifestyle. These check-ins help identify where you're vulnerable so you can adjust."

Residents can also prepare by taking an inventory of household items and taking photos or videos in case an insurance claim is needed. Be sure to keep gutters and drains clear and purchase hurricane shutters.

Other tips include having plenty of water and non-perishable food, an emergency kit and being sure to have at least three ways to receive weather alerts.

The City of Gulf Shores is preparing for hurricane season, which is June 1 through November 30, by hosting its annual Hurricane Preparedness Expo on June 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The free event will be open to the public at the Erie H. Meyer Civic Center.

There will be vendors with products and services to prepare residents for hurricanes and strong storms.
