Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall on Thursday said the “uptick in violent crime” in Washington, D.C. was due to the defund the police movement.

President Donald Trump said on Monday he would federalize the D.C. police department and deploy the National Guard to the nation’s capital to restore law and order.

Marshall, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, said during an interview on "Rightside Radio" with Phil Williams on Thursday the move by Trump was the right decision.

“Look, if you want to know why defund the police was a bad idea, look what took place in DC. They literally did exactly what they said they were going to do, dramatic reduction in the police force, and it shouldn’t surprise anyone with what we’ve seen,” Marshall said. “There’s been an uptick in violent crime, problems on the streets in that community, and now President Trump is going to be able to help solve that problem.”
